Mary, the Mother of God
Today, January first we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God.
Solemnities are special celebrations in the church and the Liturgical Calendar. They are considered even more important that feast days. They are also considered Holy Days of Obligation, or days that we are required to attend Mass. At Parables, we like to think of it not as “having to” got to Mass, but “getting to” go to Mass.
This special day reminds us that Mary played an important role in Jesus’ life. Jesus became fully human – yet still fully God through her “yes” to His plan. It is because of her cooperation with God’s will that she became the Mother of God.
Next time you go to Mass, get there a half-hour early and spend time with Jesus in the Tabernacle. Thank Him for sharing His Mother with us.
