This story takes place long ago in the land we now call Mexico. Aztec Indians lived there. They believed in strange, stone gods. When the Spaniards came, they shared the Catholic faith. Over time, tension grew between the Aztecs and the Spaniards.

At the time, there lived a poor Aztec peasant. He was one of the first to learn about the true God. When he got Baptized, he was given the name Juan Diego.

Early one morning, on December 9th, 1531, Juan was walking to Mass. As he walked along Tepeyac hill, he heard lovely music. When he lifted his head, he saw a bright cloud. A gentle voice called, “Juanito.” There was the most beautiful Indian woman! Like a princess, she wore a cape covered in stars…
