Day 8: Mary is Obedient

Mary Desires the Will of God

“Do whatever He tells you.” – John 2:5

One of the many qualities Mary has is her obedience and pointing to God. In the story of the Wedding at Cana, there is a great feast. At the time, a good host would offer wine to adult guests in celebration. It was embarrassing to run out of it. During the wedding feast, the host ran out of wine. He went to Mary and asked for her help. She told Jesus. When Jesus answered her, she turned to the host and said, “Do whatever He tells you.”

Mary shows us how to follow God’s will through this story, where she asked Jesus for help. Her “yes” when asked to become the mother of Jesus was another example of her desire for God’s will – even knowing the suffering she would feel at the end of Jesus’ life here.

In our lives, it may not always be easy to do God’s will. How do we know what His will is? To help us figure that out we have our parents, godparents, the Church, the Mass, our priests, religious education, and the stories of the saints. The Ten Commandments helps keep us on the right path and we have the sacrament of Confession when we make a mistake. God loves us and wants a true relationship with us and He claimed us at our Baptism. We became children of God that day. His desire for our hearts and love is why He gave us so many ways to continue that relationship.

Prayer: Mary, thank you for your obedience to God. Help us to follow His will too.
