The Visit of the Magi

Share This Post

Magi from the east saw a new star in the night sky. It was their belief that when a new star was visible, a new king had been born. So, they set out and visited King Herod.

“Where is the newborn king of the Jews,” the magi asked. “We saw his star rising and have come to do the new king homage.”

King Herod felt troubled at hearing of a new king as well as the rest of Jerusalem. He gathered the chief priests and scribes and asked, “Where is this Messiah?”

“In Bethlehem of Judea,” they replied, “for it has been written through the prophet:

‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,

are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;

since from you shall come a ruler,

who is to shepherd my people, Israel.’”

When King Herod heard this, he sent for the magi and asked when the star had risen. Upon hearing their answer, King Herod said, “Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage.”

The magi set out once again and saw the same star. They followed it until it rested above where Jesus was.

They went inside to see Jesus with Mary. They worshipped him and offered their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

That night the magi had a dream warning them not to return to Herod so, they headed home a different way.
