Today on September 8th we celebrate the birth of Mary, the mother of Jesus! Mary has a special place in the history of our salvation. Her “yes” to God brought Jesus to us. Although she was born sinless, she still had her free will. But when God had given her one of the greatest missions ever given to His people, she agreed! She knew that this would also bring much sorrow, but she still said yes.
While not much is written in the Bible about her birth, there are many other writings and traditions associated with it. One thing we do know is that we celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th (the day Mary was conceived without sin) occurs exactly 9 months before the celebration of her Nativity.
In contemplating her birthday, one might wonder how to celebrate. There are many things we can do in her honor such as offering the Rosary for others in need of prayer or play some songs such as Hail Holy Queen or Ave Maria. We can guess that one of the things she wants most of all is for the world to draw closer to her Son, Jesus. She cares for us and wants us to be with Jesus in Heaven. Remember, Jesus gave us His mother on the cross. She wants what’s best for us, which is to draw closer to her son.
